Start early enteral feeding once the gut is working again: active bowel sounds and a low NG output (<200 mL) show that postoperative ileus has resolved. A (high NG output, sluggish bowel sounds) is ileus, where oral intake is limited and an NGT is kept. A planned second-look laparotomy (C) or a still-depressed GCS (D) do not make the patient ideal for feeding. Early postoperative feeding is generally well tolerated and may shorten ileus.
