PTH raises plasma calcium in three ways. It stimulates osteoclastic bone resorption, increases renal tubular calcium reabsorption (while reducing phosphate reabsorption), and increases gut calcium absorption. Calcitonin, from the thyroid C-cells, has the opposite effect and lowers calcium.
