A 21- year-old man was brought to the ER after being involved in a motor vehicle crash. He opens his eyes to painful stimuli but does not follow commands. However, he does moan periodically. His right arm is deformed and he does not respond to painful stimulus; however, his left hand reaches purposefully toward the painful stimulus. What would be his Glasgow coma scale (GCS)?

الإجابة: C. 9

Score each component:

  • Eyes: opens to pain = 2
  • Verbal: moaning (incomprehensible sounds) = 2
  • Motor: score the best response; the left hand localises pain = 5

The GCS is 2 + 2 + 5 = 9 (E2V2M5). Do not score the injured, unresponsive right arm (M1); that would wrongly give 5.
