After a first episode of diverticulitis has resolved, arrange a colonoscopy a few weeks later (not during the acute attack, because of the perforation risk). This excludes a coexisting colonic carcinoma, which can mimic diverticulitis and is found in about 12%. Elective resection is not routine after one uncomplicated episode. Annual FOBT is not adequate, and simply discharging the patient misses the cancer check.
