Red flags for malignant change in a naevus are a change in shape, appearance or colour, an increase in size, ulceration or bleeding — so changing colour suggests melanoma. Regular borders and a diameter under 6 mm are reassuring, benign features (the opposite of the ABCDE warning signs). Hair in a mole and white discolouration are not listed as melanoma features.
