A carbuncle is a network of interconnecting deep abscesses (a cluster of infected hair follicles) extending into subcutaneous tissue. It has multiple discharging sinus openings and dark red-purple (gangrenous) overlying skin. It typically affects diabetic/obese patients on the back of the neck or upper back.
- Cellulitis and erysipelas are diffuse spreading infections without multiple pus-discharging openings.
