Collagen is the structural protein of the healing wound. It is laid down in the proliferative phase and cross-linked and remodelled (type III to type I) during remodeling. This gives an organized, stable scar and the wound's tensile strength, which peaks at about 80% of normal around 60 days. Cell adhesion and locomotion are not collagen's main role.
