After resecting gangrenous or perforated bowel from a strangulated hernia the field is contaminated, so the hernia lecture says the defect is repaired with non-absorbable Prolene sutures, not mesh. A small 1-cm defect is closed by primary suture repair. Any mesh is a foreign body/implant that raises the risk of infection in a contaminated field.
