Wound dehiscence is defined in the post-op complications lecture as separation of the fascia (the deep musculofascial layer), heralded by a large salmon-coloured serosanguinous discharge. Separation of only skin or subcutaneous tissue is a superficial wound breakdown, not dehiscence, and the peritoneum is not the layer that holds the abdominal closure.
