Hernia repair is a clean operation, and prophylactic antibiotics in clean surgery are given when infection risk is raised, such as when a prosthesis (mesh) is inserted. Their purpose is to reduce surgical-site (wound) infection. Bowel injury, atelectasis and bacterial translocation are not the reason. However, Bailey states that routine antibiotics for groin hernia repair are not recommended in recent guidelines, which gives some support to option D.
