Signs that bowel is viable include normal colour, peristalsis (it contracts when pinched), sheen, bleeding when cut and pulsating marginal/mesenteric arteries. An absent arterial Doppler signal, venous engorgement and distension point the other way, and enlarged mesenteric nodes say nothing about viability.
