Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is the most accurate tool for staging esophageal cancer locally: it shows the depth of wall invasion (T) and regional lymph nodes (N), and can be combined with FNA.
- CT chest/abdomen (often with PET) is still done to look for metastases and invasion of the aorta/airways, but it is not as accurate for T and N.
- Barium study shows the lesion (apple-core) but does not stage it; MRI is not the standard staging test.
