Chronic hemolysis in sickle cell disease raises unconjugated bilirubin, which precipitates as black pigment stones. Mixed stones are the most common type in the general population, but not in hemolytic patients. Cholesterol stones relate to obesity, estrogen and diabetes, and calcium oxalate is a renal stone type.
