Goodsall's rule: an external opening posterior to the transverse anal line follows a curved tract to an internal opening in the posterior midline (6 o'clock). Anterior openings run straight, radially, to the internal opening at the same clock position. An external opening exactly at 6 o'clock, 1 cm from the verge, therefore opens internally at 6 o'clock.
