Aquagenic pruritus (itching after bathing), headache (hyperviscosity), facial plethora, splenomegaly, raised Hb/Hct and a low serum erythropoietin are classic for polycythaemia vera.
- Essential thrombocythaemia is defined by platelets >600,000 with no erythrocytosis.
- Primary myelofibrosis and CML do not cause a raised Hct with suppressed EPO.
