Episodes of staring with automatisms (lip-smacking, hand-rubbing) lasting minutes, followed by postictal confusion and amnesia, are focal seizures with impaired awareness (complex partial, temporal lobe). The seizure diagnosis is confirmed by EEG (epileptiform discharges). CT, CSF and metabolic tests look for underlying causes rather than confirming the seizure.
