Hearing loss is the most common complication of bacterial meningitis. Adjunctive dexamethasone given with (or just before) the first antibiotic dose reduces hearing loss and other neurological sequelae, which is why steroids are part of the empirical regimen. Acyclovir is for viral/HSV infection and has no effect on this complication; ENT evaluation detects deafness but does not prevent it.
