Heavy menses with a microcytic anaemia (MCV 65), high RDW and mild reactive thrombocytosis is typical of iron deficiency. The initial investigation for microcytic anaemia is iron studies with ferritin.

  • B12/folate are checked for macrocytic anaemia.
  • Bone marrow biopsy is rarely needed.
  • JAK2 testing is for primary thrombocythaemia, which is diagnosed only after secondary causes such as iron deficiency are excluded.
