A young woman with mucocutaneous bleeding (epistaxis, easy bruising), a normal platelet count, a prolonged aPTT (low factor VIII) and low ristocetin cofactor activity has von Willebrand disease. The ristocetin cofactor assay is the diagnostic test for vWF function.

  • Haemophilia B is X-linked (rare in females) and has normal vWF activity.
  • Thrombocytopenia is excluded by the normal platelet count.
