Diabetic foot ulcers are largely preventable. Patient education on foot care (daily self-inspection and washing, never walking barefoot, podiatry follow-up) is the key to preventing recurrence. Prophylactic antibiotics, aspirin, a higher metformin dose or annual X-rays do not prevent new ulcers.
