Same patient: a 54-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C, new ascites, fever and diffuse abdominal pain. A diagnostic paracentesis was done. Interpret the results, give the diagnosis and outline management.
Serum albumin 2.7 g/dL. Ascitic fluid: albumin 0.8 g/dL, total protein 1.3 g/dL, WBC 820 cells/mm3, neutrophils (PMN) 560 cells/mm3. Gram stain: no organisms seen. Culture: pending.
